About Nathaniel George Grace

Nathaniel George Grace, son of Edward Nathaniel Grace and Mary Coxon was born on Sunday, December 17th, 1843 in Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England and baptized at All Saints, Church of England in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne on January 16th, 1844.

Nathaniel was educated at Cheltenham College in Cheltenham, Gloucester, England. Cheltenham College was founded in 1841 to educate the sons of gentlemen. The school took both boarding and day boys and young men and was originally divided into Classical and Military aligned education until the mid-twentieth century.

Nathaniel and his three brothers, Thomas, William and Edward were avid cricketers. Nathaniel’s earliest recorded match that we have found so far was held on September 14th, 1863 when he was 20 years old where he played for Newcastle upon Tyne along with brothers Thomas and William against the United England Eleven team at the Bath Road Grounds located in Newcastle upon Tyne. This match was a three day venue that would eventually be considered a draw.

Nathaniel married Margaret ‘Meta’ Bigger in Gateshead, Durham, England on October 31st, 1868. In July of 1869, Nathaniel and Meta’s first child was born, Nathaniel George Grace in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Between 1869 and 1870 Nathaniel went on to play the following cricket matches:

On August 28th, 1871, Nathaniel played for Northumberland Club vs. Players of Scotland at Bath Road Grounds in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Nathaniel and Meta’s third child was born on October 1st, 1872. Charles ‘Norman’ Grace was born in Newcastle upon Tyne.

On July 30th, 1873, Nathaniel played for Northumberland vs. Cumberland at Bath Road Grounds in Newcastle upon Tyne.

On November 16th, 1873, Meta passed away at the young age of 24 in Newcastle upon Tyne of typhoid fever.

The following year Nathaniel continued to play cricket. The following matches were played between 1874 and 1878:

The last recorded game that can be found for Nathaniel was on August 26th, 1878 where he played for Northumberland vs. Cumberland at The Playground in Whitehaven, England.

There are two possible years given for Nathaniel and his three sons leaving England and emigrating to Canada, settling in Montreal, Quebec. From a Canadian census record that lists Nathaniel’s son Norman, it indicates that they arrived in Canada in 1876. However, as indicated above, there are records that indicate that Nathaniel was still playing cricket in England up until 1878 and that he emigrated in 1880.

Not much is known about Nathaniel’s life in Montreal or that of his sons until October 12th, 1895 when Nathaniel married a second time to Mary Larsey Maltby in Montreal at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Their marriage was witnessed by Nathaniel’s sons, Archibald and Norman and his daughter in law, Mabel Lee (wife of Nathaniel’s eldest son, Nathaniel). At the time of their marriage, Nathaniel had been working as an insurance agent.

On May 29th, 1903, Nathaniel passed away at the age of 60 from heart failure in Montreal. He was buried at Mount Royal Cemetery the next day on May 30th. The grave location at Mount Royal Cemetery is known to descendants of Nathaniel’s however for some unknown reason the grave marker is missing.
