About Nathaniel Grace

Nathaniel Grace was born in 1742. The location of Nathaniel’s birth is currently uncertain however it is thought that his parents, possibly Edward Grace and Ann Pais were living in London, England around the year of his birth. A page from a currently unknown document indicates Nathaniel’s lineage and that he was one of twenty one children born to Edward and Ann. At this time, only three of the siblings are known by us. William born in 1744, Mary Sophia born in 1748 and Achsah born in 1753.

Records indicate that in 1767, at the age of 24, Nathaniel was living in the City of Westminster (London), England in St. George’s Hanover Square and was considered to be a Yeoman. Historically, a yeoman was described as a man holding and cultivating a small landed estate or a freeholder. His Christian denomination is recorded as being Anglican.

On July 13th, 1767, Nathaniel obtained a license to marry Mary Richardson of St. John Parish in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. George Dobson of Wallbottle, Northumberland acted as Nathaniel’s surety or bondsman.

Mary Richardson was born on February 20th, 1746 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. Her birthplace is listed as Castle Garth Church, a Scottish based Presbyterian Chapel in Newcastle upon Tyne. Based on information found on familysearch.org Mary’s father’s name has been listed as either George or Joseph Richardson.

On July 14th, 1767, Nathaniel and Mary Richardson were married in St. John Parish. Nathaniel and Mary had four children together, John (born 1768), Sarah (born 1771), Dorothy (born 1773) and Mary (born 1776 ).

In 1776 Mary Richardson passed away in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England.

On May 18th, 1779, at the age of 30, Nathaniel now living in Ponteland, Northumberland obtained a licence to marry Mary Wilson, a widower aged 25 of Ponteland. William Alder of Cramlington, Northumberland acted as Nathaniel’s surety.

Mary was born in Mason, Northumberland, England in 1753. Her fathers name was either John, Henry or James Wilson and her mother was possibly Barbara.

On May 24th, 1779 Nathaniel and Mary Wilson were married in Ponteland at St. Mary’s Anglican Church. Together they had six children; Nathaniel Jr. (born 1780), Edward (born 1781), William (born 1783), Achsah (born 1786), Robert (born 1788) and Margaret (born 1789).

Mary Wilson passed away March 24th, 1788 in Ponteland, Northumberland, England.

On June 21st, 1794, Nathaniel obtained a licence to marry Ann Alder, a widower from Ponteland. James Bell of Tynemouth, Northumberland acted as Nathaniel’s surety.

Ann was born in 1745 in Hartburn, Northumberland, England.

On June 23rd, 1794, Nathaniel and Ann were married in Ponteland. It is believed that Nathaniel and Ann did not have any children.

It is believed that Ann had been married previously to Cuthbert Alder before he passed away.

On November 30th, 1821 at the age of 79 Nathaniel Grace passed away in Ponteland and is buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Nathaniel was predeceased by his first and second wife, Mary Richardson, his second wife Mary Wilson and children Robert and Achsah.

Ann Alder passed away on May 6th, 1837 and was buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Ponteland, Northumberland, England.
